Macbook upgrade question, should I upgrade my memory and hard drive?

Are there any benefits to upgrading my memory and hard drive for my macbook pro 2.0 GHz, 4GB Memory, 500 GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm before I order it? I am a journalism major, but I also record music as a hobby and I want my computer to be able to handle all of the work I am going to be using it for. I have never owned a Mac before so I am not sure.
