If I buy a replacement HDD for my ipod video 30GB will it have the OS on it?

I'm looking at the replacement HDDs on ebay but they don't say if they have the ipod operating system on them or not... if I replace my ipod's HDD and hook it to itunes will it just automatically format it if it's blank? PLEASE only answer if you know for sure or have done this before! Thanks!
